Saudi Arabia - joining the dots: Part 1 - The return of the Sudairis

Saudi Arabia - joining the dots is a series of blog entries exploring Saudi Arabia's role in the oil markets with a brief look at the history of the royal family and politics that dictate and influence the Kingdom's oil policy.

Part 1 - The return of the Sudairis

On Friday 23rd January 2015, King Abdullah passed away paving the way for the Sudairi branch of the Royal Family to consolidate power and strengthen its grip over the country.

Prince Salman, Abdullah’s half-brother became king. The newly appointed King Salman already has family members in key positions in the governance of the Kingdom. His son Prince Mohammed bin Salman wields tremendous powerful as Defence Minister, after taking over the post from King Abdullah favourite Khaled al-Tuwaijri. King Salman’s other son, Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman is currently Assistant Minister for Petroleum Affairs and is poised to take over as Oil Minister, a hugely influential role that dictates Saudi Arabia’s, and by virtue OPEC’s, oil policy – his decision alone could tip economies into deep recession and bring about large scale social disorder. King Salman is also moving quickly to appoint family members into key positions, with the first shuffle seeing his nephew, Prince Mohammed bin Nayef currently Interior Minister elevated to the post of Second Deputy Premier, placing him in line to be the first grandson of the country’s founder to become King.
